Ferrol, La Coruña (2002) Update below/Actualización

Ferrol has been during centuries a military zone. For this reason
they decided to fortify it's access, the only possible marine access, to defend the arsenal and all other military constructions
from possible attacks. In the XVI century the fortification started constructing the castles of San Felipe, La
Palma and San Martín, this last one demolished, to create the defensive triangle. San Felipe and San Martín were
both linked with a chain cutting access for boats. The two anchors where the chain was moored at the castle of San
Felipe still exist. Large reforms were made in San Felipe and La Palma losing it's original layout. Since
the Spanish Civil War (1936-39), La Palma was converted into a military prison. San Felipe stayed as a military
defense. It's necessary to mention other many defenses in this area aside from these emblematic castles.

On the NORTH border:
Battery of Cabo Prioriño: Part of it's walls are
conserved. Coming soon.
Battery of Canelas: Disappeared. If there were
ruins before the works of the outer port is something that I don't know.
Battery of Viñes: It's conserved but it is impossible
to be visited at the moment because of the works of the outer port.
Castle of San Cristobal: It's conserved but in
bad condition. See San Cristobal section.
Castle of San Carlos: It's conserved in a very
good state. Coming soon.
Castle of San Felipe: It's conserved in a very
good state. See San Felipe section.
INLAND:
5ª bateria: Abandoned military base. XX century. See 5ª Bateria section.
Monteventoso: Watchout post. XX century. See
Monteventoso section.
On the SOUTH border:
Segaño: There was once a XVIII century battery here but
I couldn't find the ruins. There's actually ruins of a military base built in 1901. See Segaño section.
Salgueira: Not a long distance from the previous
one. Another military base. See Salgueira section.
Battery of Sudova: An installation similar to Salgueira.

Castle of San Martín: There's only a couple of walls left. A
lighthouse has been constructed on it's original location, but the two anchors that closed the ría can
be easily located. Coming soon.
Castle of La Palma: At the moment for sale for
only 1,350,000 Euros.
INLAND:
Montefaro: Old military zone composed of 4 independent
facilities. See Montefaro section.
Ferrol ha sido durante siglos una zona castrense. Por este
motivo se decidió fortificar su riá, único acceso marítimo, para defender la infraestructuras ante posibles ataques. En el
siglo XVI se comenzó con la fortificación construyendo los castillos de San Felipe, La Palma y San Martín, este último
desaparecido, para formar el triangulo defensivo. Se unieron los dos primeros con una cadena cortando el paso a embarcaciones.
Las dos anclas donde se amarraba la cadena junto al castillo de San felipe aún existen.
Se realizaron amplias reformas en San Felipe y La Palma perdiéndose el trazado original.
Desde la Guerra Civil Española (1936-39), La Palma paso a ser prisión militar. San Felipe
se mantuvo como defensa de la ría.
Hay que mencionar otras muchas defensas en esta zona aparte de estos emblemáticos castillos.

Los anclas del castillo de San Martín también existen.
Por la orilla NORTE:
Batería de Cabo Prioriño: Se conserva parte de sus murallas. Próximamente
aquí.
Batería de Canelas: Desaparecido. Si hubo ruinas antes de las obras
del puerto exterior es algo que desconozco.
Batería de Viñes: Se conserva pero es imposible visitarlo actualmente
por las obras del puerto exterior.
Castillo de San Cristobal: Se conserva pero en mal estado. Ver seccion
San Cristobal.
Castillo de San Carlos: Se conserva en muy buen estado. Proximamente aquí.
Castillo de San Felipe: Se conserva en muy buen estado. Ver sección San Felipe.
Hacía el INTERIOR:
5ª bateria: Base militar abandonado del siglo XX. Ver sección 5ª Bateria.
Pieiro: Base militar de gran extensión. Siglo XX. Ver sección Pieiro.
Monteventoso: Puesto de vigilancia. Siglo XX. Ver sección Monteventoso.
Por la orilla SUR:
Segaño: hubo una bateria costera pero no encontre los restos. Sí hay ruinas de una base militar de 1901.

Salgueira: A escasa distancia de la anterior. Otra base militar. Ver sección Salgueira.
Batería de Sudova: Una instalación similar a Salgueira. Ver sección Sudova.
Castillo de San Martín: Solo quedan algunas murallas.. Hay un faro sobre su ubicación, pero es fácil
localizar los anclas que cerraban la ría. Próximamente aquí.
Castillo de La Palma: Actualmente en venta por 1.350.000 Euros.
Hacia el INTERIOR:
Montefaro: Antigua zona militar compuesto por 4 instalaciones independientes. Ver sección
Montefaro.
