The castle of San Felipe is a military construction of defensive vocation, that was constructed by initiative of king Felipe II. The enclosure was undergoing modifications until the century XVIII which aspect we can see today. In spite of having a schedule of visits controlled by a security watchman; the building is totally abandoned and very damaged by the vegetation and humidity.

El castillo de San Felipe es una construccion militar de vocacion defensiva, que fue construido por iniciativa de rey Felipe II a quien debe su nombre. El recinto fue sufriendo modificaciones hasta el siglo XVIII cuyo aspecto divisamos hoy.
A pesar de haber un horario de visitas controlado por un vigilante de seguridad; el edificio se encuentra totalmente abandonado, sufriendo de la humedad y cubierto por la vegetacion en ciertas zonas.

Here you can see the access door the castle. The vertical slots at both sides of the door were built so that an annexed door to the bridge could be fitted within the wall.

Aqui vemos la puerta de acceso al castillo. Llaman la atencion las hendiduras verticales a ambos lados de la puerta. Esto era para que una puerta anexa al puente elevadizo pudiera quedar encajado dentro del muro.

The arched zone, next to the square of arms. This served to form to the troops on rainy days.

La zona de porticos, junto a la plaza de armas. Esto servia para formar a la tropa en dias de lluvia.

View of the castle of La Palma from the San Felipe. During the XVIII century (1726) Francisco Montaigu was in charge to the engineer the reform, extension and fortification of both castles for the defense of the city of Ferrol and its arsenals. To mention that the coup participant Antonio Tejero was locked in many years in the castle of La Palma.

The same view as the previous one but from the inferior level. Observe the curved marks of the ground. I deduce that they were guides for the wheels of the cannons, making possible to vary the angle.

La misma vista que la anterior pero desde el nivel inferior. Observe las marcas arqueadas del suelo. Deduzco que eran guias para las ruedas de los canones, para ir variando el angulo de orientacion sobre la ria.

Colorful view from the superior level on the ruins of the castle and towards the exit of the ria of Ferrol. From here we can get an idea of the distance to the base of Segano.

Pintoresca vista desde el nivel superior sobre las ruinas del castillo y hacia la salida de la ria de Ferrol. Desde aqui nos hacemos una idea de la distancia a la cual se encuentra la base de Segano.

And to end this visit, here's a pic of me in the square of arms next to the well; with the lodgings and warehouses of gunpowder to my back. Magnificent visit that I already have made twice.

Y para finalizar, aqui me teneis a mi en la plaza de armas junto al pozo; con los alojamientos de la guarnicion y almacenes de polvora a mi espalda. Magnifica visita que ya he realizado dos veces.
