Ferrol, La Coruña (2005) (First visited 2001)
The second of the four Vickers 381 locations is this base located
at Novalterra, half way to Ferrol's new port. This base was known as Lobateiras but there's a building (see last photo) with
the name Pieiro.
It started operating as an military base during the first quarter of the XX century being abandoned a the end of the
90's.
This is what we can see today.
El segundo de los cuatro emplazamientos de cañones Vickers 381 es
la base localizado en el lugar de Novalterra, camino del nuevo puerto exterior de Ferrol. Este lugar se conoce como batería
de Lobateiras aunque en un edificio (ver última foto) figura como Pieiro.
Empezó funcionando como base militar a mediados de la primera mitad del siglo XX para
ser abandonado a finales de los 90.
Esto es lo que queda hoy.
The recently restored military path that leads to the village of
Pieiro. There's plenty of traffic now passing on this path. I don't know who's painted the No Passing signs on the sentry
boxes.
La recién asfaltada vía militar que lleva hasta el pueblo de Pieiro.
Hay mucho tránsito ahora por este lugar. Desconozco quien ha pintado las señales de prohibido el paso al lugar en las garitas.
Passed the two sentry boxes we see the first abandoned buildings
on our right. In the distance you can see the white signal house of Monteventoso.
Pasadas las garitas vemos a mano derecha los primeros edificios abandonados.
A lo lejos se percibe el edificio blanco del Semáforo de Monteventoso.
Another roofless building awaits us on the right.
Otro edificio sin tejado nos espera a mano derecha.
The square AA position. This once housed four 88mm Vickers antiaircraft
guns. There are similar positions at:

La abandonada explanada monolítica de AA. Esto una vez alojó cuatro
piezas Vickers de 88mm. Se pueden ver posiciones idénticas en:

The strange stone sentry box on the left of the path. There's an
identical one at the 5ª BATERIA (See Section.)
La extraña garita de piedra a la izquierda del camino. Hay uno idéntico
en la 5ª BATERIA (Ver sección.)
Another two buildings on the right. The white signal house in the
distance and the sentry box seen above just on the right of the big bush.
Otras dos edificaciones abandonadas. A lo lejos el Semáforo de Monteventoso.
Justo a la derecha del gran arbusto se encuentra la garita de arriba.
We now turn right, once passed the buildings above, to face the
entrance, by stairs, to the machine room of the first 381 cannon (the one with most elevation.) This place has been converted
into a complete rubbish dump.
Ahora torcemos a la derecha tras rebasar el edificio de arriba. Vemos
de frente la entrada, por las escaleras, a la sala de máquinas de la primera pieza 381 (la de mayor cota). El lugar sigue
siendo un vertedero incontrolado.
We are now overlooking the same path as the photo above. Just under
my feet is the access to the machine room, on the left the emergency exit (in case of explosion) and to the right the tunnel
that leads down to the store room. You can still notice the rails on the floor.
Ahora una vista aérea del camino visto arriba. Justo bajo mis pies
se encuentra el acceso, via escaleras, a la sala de máquinas. A la izquierda la salida de emergencia, en caso de explosión.
A la derecha el acceso, via túnel, hasta el almacén, Aún se perciben las vías en el suelo.

There's another once exactly the same on it's right and about 200 meters in front. The white signal house of Monteventoso
in the distance.

Yes, it's the identical access to the machine room of the lower
position. The tunnel isn't on the left, it's further away and covered in vegetation.
Idéntco acceso a la sala de máquinas del 381 de cota baja. El túnel
no se encuentra justo a la izquierda, sino más lejos y totalmente cubierto de vegetación.

Just a couple of meters from the 381 location is this AA position
in the middle of the weeds. It was impossible to access the tunnel.
A unos pocos metros, a mano izquierda, de la posición 381 de cota
baja se encuentra esta posición AA totalmente cubierto de vegetación. Era imposible acceder a él.
And to end this renovated 2005 section, a photo of where the name
Pieiro has come from. This building is about 150 meters left the 381 lower position. In fact, there's two identical, one next
to the other. Why the Pieiro name? I have no clue at all.
To conclude the section, just say that the place has got worst over the last 4 years.
Imagine what it'll be like in 4 years time?
Y ya para finalizar esta renovada sección 2005, solo mostrar de donde
salió el nombre de Pieiro. Este edificio (realmente son dos iguales) se encuentra a unos 150 metros a la izquierda de la pieza
381 de cota baja. Por qué de Pieiro? No tengo ni idea.
Y por último, decir que el sitio ha empeorado muchísimo a lo largo de los últimos 4
años.
