It’s now been 4 years since my first & only visit to the only American military base located in Galicia. I’ve been willing to return since 2002 but I’ve never found time or been in the mood.

A couple of weeks before Easter, a Military Ruins visitor sent me some recent photos of this location. They were taken in 2005 and, from my point of view, the place was much more vandalised & abandoned as in 2002. A new visit was necessary.

I first went up to see the Semáforo of Bares (old maritime signal station), actually converted into a Hotel (with a large waiting list) with a bar & restaurant with magnificent views over Coelleira Island, Viveiro and it’s ría, Bares, the lighthouse and the abandoned American base. This last location is only visible from the edge of the north garden.

Ya han pasado más de 4 años desde mi única vista a la única base militar estadounidense en territorio gallego. He tenido intención de regresar a este lugar, el más septentrional de España, pero nunca he tenido tiempo o ganas.

Unas semanas antes de semana santa, un visitante de Military Ruins me envió unas fotos bastante más recientes que las que yo tenía expuestas aquí. Fueron tomadas en 2005 y, por lo visto, la base estaba bastante más abandonada y vandalizada que en el 2002. Era necesaria una visita para ver todo de cerca.

Subí hasta el mirador del Semáforo de Bares, actualmente un hotel en funcionamiento (y con bastante lista de espera) con bar-restaurante y magníficas vistas sobre la isla Coelleira, Viveiro y su ría, Bares, el faro y la ruinosa base militar americana. Este último visible desde el borde del jardín del hotel.

Over the last years I’ve been lucky enough to meet, thanks to Military Ruins, the niece of the 2º machine official of the U-966: Franz Farny. But that is another story.

A lo largo de los últimos años he tenido la grandísima suerte de conocer, gracias a Military Ruins, al nieto del cabo 2º de máquinas del U-966 Franz Farny. Pero eso es otra historia.

View of the control room, practically the same as in 2002. This room is nearly pitch black: the only light comes from a small window on the ceiling.

Vista de la sala de control, prácticamente igual que en 2002. Este sitio se encuentra prácticamente a oscuras salvo una pequeña claraboya en el techo.

In this room, back in 2002, the generators were still in there positions. Since then, tourists & curious apart, the scrap hunters & other vandals have been here to destroy what remains standing.

En esta sala, en el 2002, todavía estaban los generadores en su sitio. Desde entonces, aparte de turistas, curiosos y paseantes, han pasado los cazadores de chatarra y demás vándalos para seguir con su empeño de destruir cuanto queda en pie.

Saliendo hacia el exterior vemos el edificio que lleva hacia las antenas. En el año 2002 había 3 en pie. Ahora, abril de 2006, quedan 2. ¿Habrán caído todos para el 2012?

This is the other side of the building, near the garages & tanks. The white rock is at this end.

Rear side of the generator rooms. To the right, a hole where the blue tank passed through. The two horizontal tubes look like exhaust pipes. There’s another tank behind the white wall. Will it be robbed across the fence?

The white stone, symbol of the Estaca de Bares base. You can read: “Estaca Glider Port”. There was once a Snoopy on a glider painted on that black square. I found this out thanks to one of the Americans that was destinated here.

La roca blanca, símbolo de la base de Estaca de Bares. El texto dice: “Estaca Glider Port”. Sobre el cuadro negro había un Snoopy montado en ala delta. Lo he averiguado por uno de los americanos que estuvieron destinados aquí.

We are in the middle of the main area. On the left you can see the official’s zone. The troop rooms are on the right hand side. At the end you can see the bar. The little white square in the middle is the bbq.

Ahora nos encontramos en medio de las estancias principales. A la izquierda los alojamientos de oficiales. A la derecha, alojamientos de tropa. Al fondo el bar. El pequeño cuadrado blanco en medio es la barbacoa.

And to end my 2006 trip, a view overlooking one of the renovated & recently vandalised watermills.

It’s a real shame that the town hall, the council or even the Xunta didn’t take over this place when it was abandoned back in the 90’s.

A museum covering the history of the complex with is personnel would have been a good idea o maybe a youth hostel with a restaurant for tourists. The problem’s always the same, will realise what we had & it’s possible economical side for the area when it’s too late. The same thing has happened to Lugo’s nazi aerial: until it fell down nobody moved a finger.

We will never learn, never.

PS: There are plans to demolish the site at the end of 2006, beginning of 2007. If this will take place or not, I do not know.

I’m planning to make a final visit to the site, one that will take at least 8 hours, over the following months.

Y para finalizar, una vista del extremo de la base con los molinos restaurados y nuevamente vandalizados en primer término.

Es una verdadera pena que el ayuntamiento, el concello o incluso la Xunta no se hicieran cargo de estas instalaciones a principios de los noventa cuando fue abandonada. Se podría haber montado un museo sobre la historia de la instalación y sus ocupantes o tal vez montado un albergue con restaurante para turistas. La cuestión es que, como siempre, nos daremos cuenta tarde de lo que poseíamos y de su potencial económico para la zona. Lo mismo ha pasado con la antena nazi de Lugo: hasta que cayó nadie movió un dedo.

Nunca aprenderemos, nunca.

PD: Hay planes para demoler la base a finales del 2006, principios del 2007. Si esto tendrá lugar o no es una cosa que desconozco.

Estoy planeando una visita final a la base, una que llevara por lo menos 8 horas, a lo largo de los próximos meses.
