H.M.S. Serpent Cemetery

Camariñas, La Coruña (2002)

HMS. SERPENT was built at Devonport in November 1885 and launched on 10 March 1887. 1,770 tons, 225 x 13.6 ft, she was armed with six 6" guns and five 14" torpedo tubes. She was the first vessel in the Royal Navy to use galvanising to protect metal plates exposed to bilge water.

She sailed from Plymouth on Saturday 8 November heading Sierra Leone.

On the night of Monday the 6, three seamen from the Serpent reached the small village of Camariñas, in the province of La Coruña, wounded and completed exhausted. After telling the locals what happened, the people gathered together and went to the spot of the wreck. There was no sign of any other survivors. On the next morning there was no sign of the Serpent either.

A total of 172 people died the which were buried close to the wreck spot.

Although there are several versions of what happened, the final verdict was that the Serpent had been lost through an error in navigation.

El HMS SERPENT fue construido en Devonport en Noviembre de 1885 y botado el 10 de Marzo de 1887. Pesaba 1.770 toneladas, con unas dimensiones de 225x13.6 pies, armado con 6 cañones de 6" y cinco tubos de torpedo de 14". Fue el primer barco de la Royal Navy en usar el galvanizado para proteger las planchas metálicas del agua salada.

Navego desde Plymouth el Sábado 8 de Noviembre con dirección a Sierra Leona.

Durante la noche del Lunes 9, tres marinos del Serpent alcanzaron el pueblo de Camariñas, en la provincia de La Coruña heridos y totalmente exhaustos. Tras contar lo ocurrido todo el pueblo se unió para ir hasta la costa donde tuvo lugar el naufragio. No hubo señal de más supervivientes y a la mañana siguiente no había ni rastro del buque Serpent.

En total fallecieron 172 personas los cuales fueron enterrados muy cerca del lugar del naufragio.

Hay varias versiones referente a lo ocurrido pero la versión oficial atribuye el naufragio a un error de navegación.
