HISTORICAL INFO
Installed by the Germans before the beginning of World War II; its original name is SONNE (SUN in english or SOL in Spanish). The central mast broadcasted the main signal, the lateral masts were used to broadcast the same signal moved of phase to simulate a wave of slow rotation. That rotation was synchronous with a Morse code giving a direct indication of the location, the only necessary equipment was a chronometer clock and a BEACON band frequency receiver. That simple equipment gave a rank of up to 1000 miles with a precision of average to high depending on the hour of the day and the distance. It was installed by the Germans to give cover to waters of the Atlantic. The system was perfectly known by the allies that also used it, that was the reason wy the sites were never bombed. During World War II there were three stations working in Germany, one in Brest (France) and this of Lugo, Spain. Name CONSOL was given by the allies like a joke meaning " With Sun ". In France one stayed in operation until the decade of the 60. In Spain it was military property used by the Civil Aviation. I don't know the date of closing of the station. Recently I have found out that these stations were known technically like ELECTRO-SONNE, and that Professor RV JONES was the one who issued the order of Not bombing them during the war.

El mastil central radiaba la onda principal, los mastiles laterales eran utilizados para radiar la misma onda desplazada de fase para simular una onda de rotacion lenta. Esa rotacion era sincronizada con un codigo Morse dando una indicacion directa de la ubicacion, el unico equipamiento necesario era un reloj cronometro y un receptor de frecuencia de banda BEACON. The station was military property until year 1962, date in which it was passed over to the Civil Aviation Authority in whose hands it stayed until 1971, date of closing and abandonment.
During World War II, there was a failure in the antennas. The real problem arose when the Germans were not able to make arrive the spare pieces to Lugo (I don't know the reason) and that the British finally provided the pieces. A clear example that proves that these antennas were used by both sides.
There is an exact distance of 2823,104 meters between each antenna.
Next to the central antenna there were two constructions. A transmission platform (?) and another formed by a dormitory, a kitchen, a living room and a garage.
This historical relic is known in the area as: THE TOWERS OF ARNEIRO

-La estacion fue propiedad militar hasta el año 1962, fecha en la que paso a ser de la Autoridad de Aviacion Civil en cuyas manos se mantuvo hasta 1971, fecha de cierre y abandono.
-Durante la II Guerra Mundial, hubo algun tipo de averia en las antenas. El autentico problema surgio cuando los alemanes no fueron capaces de hacer llegar las piezas de repuesto a Lugo (desconozco el motivo) y que fueron los britanicos los que suministraron las piezas. Claro ejemplo de que estas antenas eran empleadas por ambos bandos.
-Hay un distancia exacta de 2823.104 metros entre cada antena.
-Junto a la antena central hubo dos edificaciones. Una plataforma de transmision (??) y otro formado por un dormitorio, cocina, sala de estar y garaje.
-Esta reliquia historica se conoce en la zona como:

I made this trip from Rábade so that the first aerial to be visited would be the one located at Momán, just as in 1998. Everything is about the same; the house of our local guide is now closed. What I did locate this time was the auxiliary hut. The other one, the corrugated metal hut is still there, just the same as in 1998. For how long I wonder? In fact, this is the only hut standing. The Arneiro hut, the middle one, was scraped in 2004.

I could notice one of the tensors in a bad state. This could be a bad sign.

Hice el viaje desde Rábade de manera que la primera antena a ser visitada fue la de Momán, la primera que visite en 1998. Todo sigue más o menos igual; la casa de nuestro guía de aquel año ahora se encuentra cerrada a cal y canto. Lo que sí fui capaz de hallar es la caseta auxiliar de la antena. La otra caseta, la de chapa, sigue en un buen estado, casi tanto como en 1998. ¿Pero por cuanto tiempo? De hecho esta es la única que sigue en pie. La caseta de Arneiro, la antena del medio, fue desmontado como chatarra en 2004.

Pude notar que uno de los tensores se encontraba en muy mal estado. Esto puede ser una mala señal.

It was rather complicated to locate the Abadín aerial mainly because there’s no visual contact. I had to calculate 3 km as passing the central aerial to situate myself. This and having to ask two locals to finally reach the house we stopped at back in 1998.

The aerial didn’t fall like a tree, in a straight line, but has a J shape. I want to think that the 3 upper tensors broke making it fall to one side but when the lower 3 pulled the structure it bend falling in two different directions.

Encontrar la de Abadín fue relativamente complejo porque la referencia visual ya no existe. Tuve que calcular la distancia de 3km, al pasar por la antena central, para saber por donde andaba. Eso y preguntar dos veces para llegar finalmente a la casa donde nos habíamos detenido en 1998.

La antena no cayó como un árbol, en línea recta, sino que tiene forma de J. Quiero pensar que cedieron los tres tensores de arriba cayendo hacia un lado pero cuando tensaron los tres tensores de abajo se doblo y cayo hacia dos lados distintos.

I’ve decided to publish part of my last photo of the Abadín aerial taken from the path that leads to the Arneiro one. The cemetery in first line must have been a signal. This photo was taken on May, 11^th 2005.

After my personal inspection on the ground, I think that this structure will never be raised again, at least with it’s original profiles

It’s utterly impossible to open thousands of rusty nuts and bolts 70 years old.

It’s utterly impossible to give the original shape and resistance to the bend and broken profiles.

It’s impossible for the bronze cylinder to appear again.

It’s impossible to use the 6 cables again.

I’ve heard that the Terra Cha Foundation wants to catalogue the site NOW IT’S FALLEN DOWN! And also use them as internet transmitters.

The problem in Galicia, or should I say Spain, is that we always remember things when there gone forever, fallen to the ground, been robbed, sunken or just shattered instead of having a little sense and investing less cash while the site is still standing.

But that museum , if it would have been opened 20 years ago, would have been one of the best military museums in Europe. All that’s left now are a couple of empty and vandalised buildings where a photos can be pinned up and pray to recuperate one or two of the robbed items.

I’m shore that another one will fall before anything is done. This is Galicia and a german transmitter doesn’t give votes!

He decidido publicar aquí parte de mi última foto de la antena de Abadín tomada desde el camino que lleva a la de Arneiro. El cementerio en primer plano debió de ser una señal. Esta foto fue tomada el 11 de Mayo de 2005.

Tras mi inspección personal sobre el terreno, deduzco que esta antena jamás será levantada de nuevo, al menos con todo su material original.

Es casi imposible sacar miles de tuercas de grandes tornillos oxidados a lo largo de 70 años.

Es casi imposible volver a dar forma y consistencia a los perfiles doblados o rotos.

Es casi imposible que aparezca el cilindro de bronce.

Es casi imposible que los tensores sirvan para algo.

Veo bien que la Fundación Comarcal da Terra Cha quiera, AHORA QUE HA CAIDO, pedir que se cataloguen las antenas como bien de interés y usarlos para radiar Internet en 50 Km. a la redonda.

El problema que hay en Galicia, por no decir en España, es que siempre nos acordamos de todo cuando cae, se incendia, se roba, se rompe, se hunde o simplemente se fragmenta. En vez de tener ojo para saber lo que puede ser recuperado con poco dinero para que pueda aportar mucho más en el futuro, aquí preferimos esperar a perderlo e invertir el triple del dinero para que nunca se parezca a lo que fue o levantarlo de nuevo con materiales nuevos.

Pero ese museo, de haberse materializado hace 20 años, habría sido algo único. Ahora solo queda llorar por lo que pudo ser, quizás montar una sala con fotos y rezar para recuperar algún objeto robado.

Estoy seguro que aun caerá otra antes de que se haga algo. Esto es Galicia, y una emisora alemana no da votos.

The structure that goes from the bend to the base is bad but gradually gains its original form as reaching the base, mainly because there’s no weight in this area. La parte que va desde el ángulo hasta la base se encuentra en mal estado pero va recobrando su forma original según te acercas a la base, en parte por no haber ningún peso en esta zona. There’s mayor damage on the capacitor. It’s 50% destroyed. In fact, because of the impact, part of the tubes are underground. El daño de la parte superior es muy grave. El capacitador se encuentra destruido en un 50%. De hecho, debido al impacto, parte de los tubos se encuentran enterrados bajo tierra. Shattered lower part. Tramo inferior destrozada. The bronze cylinder has already disappeared. I want to think that someone close by has put it in a safe place but I’m afraid that it’s probably been mugged to be sold as scrap.
