Cabo Silleiro

I had received many emails concerning the existence of an battery located 30 kms south the city of Vigo and about 5 kms south Baiona, in the province of Pontevedra, where 4 Vickers 152.4 cannons still looked out to sea. It was just a matter of time to find out myself. This trip was made at the turn of summer 2002, a couple of months before the oil tanker Prestige sank in front of our coasts.

Había recibido muchos correos sobre los restos de una batería al sur de Baiona, provincia de Pontevedra, donde aún se encontraban cuatro cañones en sus posiciones originales. Solo era cuestión de ir hasta allí para verlo in situ.

El viaje se realizo a finales del verano de 2002, pocos meses antes del desastre del petrolero Prestige.

Decimos que contamos con un excepcional guía de Vigo, quien nos acompañó en toda la visita. ¡Gracias de nuevo! (a pesar de que han pasado 3 años)

We made the first stop at the bottom of the mountain where a abandoned road leads up the the modern lighthouse of Cabo Silleiro. The closed ruins of the old lighthouse are located at my right. Baiona is 5kms behind me. The first thing I done once I got out the car was to look at the impressive sight! There they were, 4 Vickers 152.4 with the tubes still facing the sea.

La primera parada se efectuó a los pies de un camino que se desviaba hacia el faro nuevo de Cabo Silleiro. Las ruinas selladas del faro viejo se encontraban a unos 300 metros a nuestra derecha. Baiona se encuentra a unos 5 kms a nuestras espaldas. Nada más bajar del coche observamos el monte… era impresionante. Ahí estaban los 4 Vickers 152,4 en sus bunkers sellados con los tubos todavía apuntando aún hacia el mar.

Great view from the top of the mountian. From this point we can see the telemeter bunker and three of the four Vickers positions. One thing is to see it here in a pic and another thing is to see it live.

Gran vista desde la cima. Podemos observar desde este punto el bunker de telemetría, y tres de los cuatro cañones. Una cosa es verlo en foto y otra muy distinta el verlo en directo.

The triumphal arch access through the which we acceded the base. This is the rear view, I could'nt take the front view because of the sun. Really impressive.

El arco triunfal por la que se accede a la base. Esta es la vista posterior. La frontal no la pude hacer por tener el sol de frente. Realmente sorprendente.

A destroyed building to my right. Behind this are ruins of tables and chairs with magnificent views over the river of Vigo, baiona and the Cies islands.

Un edificio destruido hacia nuestra derecha. Tras esto hay ruinas de unas mesas y bancos con excelentes vistas sobre la ría de Vigo, Baiona y las islas Cies.

This is the area with the main buildings. Everthing is ver devastated by the pass of time and vandalism. That up the top is the telemeter bunker.

Esta es la zona de los edificios principales. Todo muy devastado por el tiempo y el vandalismo. Aquello de ahí arriba es el bunker de telemetría.

To my left is the canteen, in front of me are two little fountains and to my right, where the arrow is pointing, is the access to the gigantic underground complex. it's also possible to access the underground tunnels by the shaft at the telemeter bunker.What I don't know is if it's possible to access the base from more places since the sinking of the Prestige. I'm saying this because the advance of the fuel was controlled from this telemeter bunker with large binoculars from tuna ships. All the walls were pulled down because of this reason. I haven't retuned since.

A la izquierda el bar, en primer plano dos pequeños estanques y hacia la derecha, donde se encuentra la punta de la flecha, la localización del acceso al interior. También es posible acceder desde el bunker por una escalerilla metálica. Lo que desconozco es si es posible acceder desde más sitios desde el hundimiento de Prestige. Lo digo porque se siguió el avance del fuel por el mar desde este bunker con prismáticos procedentes de atuneros. Todos los tabiques de cierre fueron demolidos por este motivo. No he vuelto desde entonces.

Our shadows on the wall of the bunker with the sealed tube. I imagine that the hooks all around the wall were for camouflage nets.

Nosotros proyectados sobre el cierre del bunker con el tubo sellado. Deduzco que los ganchos eran para amarrar redes de camuflaje.
