Ferrol Burns - Arde Ferrol

As 99% of the people already know, the Green Galicia has been completely burnt. I’m not going to enter political reasons, revenges; sexual maniacs that get excited with the flames or any other sick mind… simply show in 11 photos the plenty I saw in just a few hours on Saturday, the 15^th of august 2006.

Como ya saben el 99% de las personas, la Galicia Verde que tanto amamos ha sido pasto de las llamas. No voy a entrar en motivos políticos, venganzas, maníacos sexuales que se excitan con el fuego o cualquier otra cosa de mente enferma... simplemente mostrar en 11 fotografías lo mucho que pude ver en unas pocas horas el sábado 12 de agosto de 2006.

Some days before, I saw smoke coming from a great fire near Ferrol. I took several pics from the city of La Coruña and several more from Gandario beach, near Sada. The top photo shows the smoke above the ría and the city. On the lower photo you can see the port of Sada and behind the smoking surroundings of the aerials of Montefaro.

Unos días antes pude divisar una gran columna de humo de un gran incendio cerca de Ferrol. Saque varias fotos desde la ciudad de La Coruña y otras tantas desde la playa de Gandarío, cerca de Sada. La primera foto muestra el humo por encima de la ría y la ciudad. En la de abajo vemos el puerto de Sada y detrás las antenas de Montefaro echando humo.

Saturday morning. I decided to go up Montefaro as there’s no trace of smoke from the city. I want to think that the fire has been extinguished. I pass the Santa Catalina of Montefaro monastery (curiously closed), I also notice the black pine trees on my left. I continue the path that leads me to the Bailadora battery and see that everything on my left hand side is burnt. I park the car and see ashes everywhere. Everything except the Bailadora ruins has been burnt. I walk to the end of the path to take a pic of the Ferrol ría with the Segaño battery ruins on the left and the new Ferrol port pier on the right. To remember what it looked like a year ago, I’ve included a photo on the left.

Sábado por la mañana. Me acerco hasta Montefaro ya que desde la ciudad no se ve humo. Quiero entender que el fuego ha sido extinguido. Paso por delante del monasterio de Santa Catalina de Montefaro (curiosamente cerrado), veo el pinar de la izquierda de color negro. Sigo subiendo por la carretera hacia la batería de Bailadora para ver el monte a mi izquierda totalmente quemado. Aparco para ver ceniza por todas partes. Todo ha sido quemado. Tan solo las piedras de la batería están intactas. Voy hacia el extremo de la carretera para sacar la foto de la ría de Ferrol con la batería de Segaño a mano izquierda y el muelle del nuevo puerto de Ferrol a la derecha. Para recordaros como era hace un año, os he puesto una foto a la izquierda.

For the next photo I just had to turn around 180º to see the castle of La Palma down below. I once again have included a 2005 photo on the left.

Para la siguiente foto tan solo tuve que girarme 180º para ver, allá abajo, el Castillo de La Palma. Nuevamente he incluido una foto del 2005 a la izquierda.

One of the many sentry boxes on burnt land. One thing is to simply look at the photo and another is to walk around this place that, not too long ago, was beautiful and green.

Uno de las garitas sobre tierra quemada. Una cosa es simplemente mirar la foto y otra es pasear por este lugar, la cual, hasta hace poco era verde y bello.

I drove down to the Fuenteseca base, just below the Montefaro aerials and above the Segaño and Salgueira batterys (all on the south river bank).

I just haven’t any works to describe the site.

Conduje hasta la base de Fuenteseca, justo debajo de las antenas de Montefaro y por encima de las baterías de Segaño y Salgueira (todo en la orilla sur de la ría). Simplemente no tengo palabras para describir el lugar.

How many years will I have to wait to see this green again?

Una vista desde la batería de Fuenteseca sobre la batería de Salgueira. Prácticamente nada ha escapado del fuego.

View from the Lobateiras battery, (Vickers 381mm), on the north side of the river. You can here see the Segaño battery with it’s three artillery positions (1, 2 & 3) now clearly visible with everything burnt. The base ruins are above the word “Segaño”. Black, black, black…

This one hasn’t much to do with military ruins but it’s in Ferrol & I was up there two weeks before taking photos. It’s the Chamorro church high above the city.

These mental people even had to go up there to burn the area. I just don’t understand anything.

Esta no tiene mucho que ver con ruinas militares pero esta en Ferrol y estuve allí arriba hace dos semanas sacando fotos. Es la ermita de Chamorro, muy por encima de la ciudad.

Estos enfermos mentales tuvieron que ir hasta allí arriba para quemar el entorno. Simplemente no entiendo nada.

Now this photo tells what’s been going on for the last few weeks: a heat wave, no rain and sickos poncing around the forests and fields setting everything on fire. I drove up this road about three hours before to take photos of the tunnels near the Cabo Prioriño lighthouse and on my way back I found this sight.

Can you understand it? I can’t.

Ahora, esta foto explica claramente lo que ha estado pasando las últimas semanas: una ola de calor, ausencia de lluvia y tipos enfermizos pululando por los bosques y campos prendiendo fuego a todo. Subí por esta carretera para sacar fotos a los túneles cerca del faro de Cabo Prioriño unas tres horas antes y al volver a bajar me encuentro con este panorama.

¿Puedes entenderlo? Yo no.

And to end this horrible day around the Ferrol Military Ruins, a good notice and a happy photo: the reconstruction of the Viñas battery (XVIII century ría of Ferrol defence) just above the new Ferrol port pier. It’s the light brown construction that hasn’t concluded yet. It’s original location was where the port is now.

And the white building that’s in the top left corner is the new museum that’s going to cover the Ferrol defences.

That’s hope that things will change, the Galicia will be green again & that people thing twice before murdering our future.

Y para terminar este día horrible por las ruinas militares de Ferrol, una Buena noticia y una foto feliz: la reconstrucción de la batería de Viñas (defensa de la ría del siglo XVIII) justo por encima del muelle del puerto exterior de Ferrol. Es la construcción de color marrón clarito cuya ejecución todavía no ha concluido. Su posición original estaba donde actualmente se encuentra el puerto. Y el edificio blanco en la esquina superior izquierdo es el nuevo centro de interpretación de las defensas de Ferrol.

Esperemos que las cosas cambien, que Galicia vuelva a ser verde y que la gente se lo piense dos veces antes de asesinar nuestro futuro.
